Delewareonline.com is reporting that neighbors are complaining of odors from the Wilmington Organic Recycling Center near the Port of Wilmington. Deleware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has fined Peninsula Composting Company LLC $25,000 for prohibited wastes, storing wastes outside approved areas, piles exceeding state size limits and inadequate cash reserves for properly shutting down the operation. One resident, Ann Tucker, is quoted in the story saying “At certain times, it’s real bad” and “When its rains or when the wind blows, it’s hard. They need to get us out of here if they’re going to keep letting them do that.” According to Rep. James Johnson, D-New Castle, community frustration over the continuing odor intrusions resulted in the creation of a committee of civic leaders to seek action and relief.
